If you have graduated from a school in South Africa in Public Relations and you want to study in the states to make that degree internationally recognized, do you take just a few conversion courses or do you have to start over with a four-year degree? Where can I go to find this information? I have called my local schools and I have contacted PRSA (Public Relations Society of America) and I haven't gotten any concrete answers.

  1. I have a few friends and co-workers that received their degrees in other countries (Bangladesh and India) they both had to redo all 4 years to get the degree (again) here in the states.

  2. Apply to whichever schools you would like to attend for their master's program (two years). They will let you know if your current degree is recognized or not at that time.

  3. It depends on whether your South African degree is considered the equivalent to a US bachelor's degree, or not. Depending on what it's equivalent to, you may not need to redo the entire degree in the US. You may be able to move on to a masters degree - an advanced degree. But again, that depends on whether or not your degree is considered the equivalent to one from a US university.

There are actually companies who will evaluate your educational credentials, and tell you what they are the equivalent to under the US system. I will link to a page that lists several such companies, below.

In this way, you can find out if your South African education is the equivalent to something in the US system, and thus where you need to start in your US education.
