Can someone please explain breast feeding to me?

My very first initial experience felt like tiny knives going through the breast.  But after that first time, it was mainly just the nipples that hurt, but if you get them latched on properly, it won't hurt as bad.  I only did it for a couple of weeks and then my milk dried up.

Proper placement of the baby on the breast is essential.  If the baby has as much of the areola in their mouth that you can get in there...then it "shouldn't" hurt.  I will say, however, I've nursed 3 babies, and it DID hurt, and I teach people to breastfeed.  SO...it only hurt for about 1 week, and then it didn't hurt at all.  Breast feeding is an incredible experience.  To look at your baby and know at 4 months of age that they are alive and thriving because of YOU.....phenomenal!  It's an incredible bonding experience as well.  I say do it, enjoy it, and cherish it!  Nothing else like it in the world.
