  1. okay, my son is a rugby player...basically they need to sore what ist called tries....they achieve thisby doing touch downs behind the line on their own goual end, once they have scored three tries they can then take a shot at the goal of which they have to put the ball over the top bar on the goal area (trying to explain football wise as eveyone understands football...so guys BUT out). basically its all about tries and scoring from that, just watch and learn.

  2. Re: First answer. The "three tries and you can kick" must be a school rule, it's not a standard rugby rule.

Way too much to describe in an answer on here.

Basically it's a game of American football, with the following differences:

    - A touchdown is called a try and is only worth 5 pts.

    - A point after is called a conversion and is worth 2 pts. There is no option to score more like the two point conversion in American football.

    - No forward passing is allowed.

    - Offside is dynamic and follows the line that the ball is at, rather than just at a snap.

    - There are no yardarge penalties, just kicked penalties, which within range can be kicked at goal, when successful it is worth 3pts.

    - A "drop kick" is like an open play punt at goal, which when successful is also worth 3pts.

    - Various infractions or stoppages in play lead to a scrum, which is similar to a line of scrimmage but the one team can drive the other back.

    - Ball out of bounds results in a line-out, where the ball can be stolen.

    - The rugby union rule set allows for 15 players not 11.

    - The same 15 players compete on the field with limited substitutions as in soccer. The numbers 1 through 8 are the forwards (like a defensive or offensive line), the 9 is the "quarterback" and the 10-15 are the backs, like running backs, receivers and safeties.

That's about the gist of the rules differences between American football and rugby union football. There is also a 13-man code called rugby league, which has some differences in play but the version played worldwide is rugby union. League is only played in a few countries.
