In the UK we have primary school, secondary school and university.

What is elementary school, junior school, middle school, high school, college etc. I don't understand. What are the age ranges for each? And what is a "sophomore year"?

Thanks

  1. Elementary school is usually kindergarten through fifth grade.  Kindergarteners usually begin at age five, and then first grade begins at age six.

Middle or junior high school is usually sixth through eighth grade.

High school is ninth through twelfth grade.

    Freshman year is ninth grade

    Sophomore year is tenth grade

    Junior year is eleventh grade

    Senior year is twelfth grade

Some school districts may do things a bit differently, but that is how most of them make the distinctions.

After that, you may choose to go on to college, where the "freshman, sophomore" thing starts all over again.  A Bachelor's Degree takes four years, assuming you take a full course load every semester.

  2. preschool sometimes isn't required. it's for ages 3 to 4.

kindergarten goes from ages 4 to 5.

sometimes elementary schools (i'll go into that next) provide preschool and kindergarten, sometimes kids go to a separate school for 'early childhood' or whatever. it really depends on how wealthy your district/neighborhood is, haha.

all that aside... students start 'elementary' or 'primary' school at age six, in first grade. elementary school goes grades one through five, though some primary schools in the new england area go through grades one through six. either way, kids leave elementary at about age 11/12.

junior high is the next school you go to, which is mostly... preteens. grades six through eight, or, if you went to an elementary school that had grades one through six, you go to a 'middle school' which is just grades seven and eight. the difference between 'junior high' and 'middle school' is basically the number of students that attend that school. i think if they're bigger, they're usually called junior high. either way, you leave at grade eight at about 13/14 years of age.

then you go to highschool. highschool is four years, and lasts from about ages 13/14 to 17/18.

    ninth grade - freshman year

    tenth - sophmore

    eleventh - junior

    twelfth -- senior.

after senior year, when you're about 17 or 18, you can go to college or university, or decide to not continue schooling at all. :)

that's just the public schooling system, though. some catholic private schools teach grades 1 through 8, then you go to a catholic high school. there are also some boarding schools which teach you from grade one through twelve.

    middle school:

    6th grade-ages 10-12

    seventh grade- ages11-13

    eigth grade- ages 12-14

    high school:

    ninth grade(freshman)- ages 13-15

    tenth grade(sophmore)-ages 14-16

    eleventh grade(junior)-ages 15-17

    college:

    1st year(freshman)-ages 17-19

    hope i helped

  4. In America, there is elementary school, middle school, and high school. After that, one can opt to go to college, but it isn't required or free.

You have to be at least 4 to start kindergarten, but usually you have to be 5. If you start Kindergarten when you are 4, you must turn 5 by a cutoff date, usually in mid to late September or early October. For example, our schools usually start in early August. My brother started kindergarten when he was 4, but he turned 5 on September 1 that year. Here is a list of what age people usually are at the beginning of each grade.

    Elementary: Kindergarten- 4 or 5

    Elementary: 1st grade- 5 or 6

    Elementary: 2nd grade- 6 or 7

    Elementary :3rd grade- 7 or 8

    Elementary: 4th grade- 8 or 9

Elementary or Middle: 5th grade- 9 or 10

Elementary or Middle: 6th grade- 10 or 11

Middle or Junior high: 7th grade- 11 or 12

Middle or Junior high: 8th grade-12 or 13

Junior high or High: 9th grade or Freshman year-1 3 or 14

High: 10th grade or Sophomore year- 14 or 15

High: 11th grade or Junior year- 15 or 16

    High:12th grade or Senior year-16 or 17

Most people are the second number when they start that grade. Those that are the first number usually have a birthday within the first month of school. An easy way to remember what age most people are is to add 5 to whatever grade they are in. So if someone says "I'm in 9th grade," you can assume he is 14. However, when it gets close to the end of the school year (March, April, and May), most people will have had their birthday and will be six years more that whatever grade they are in.
