  1. It's an in family conflict. One part of Georgia wants to go over the the Motherland Russia. Georgia said no you are a part of us and we will not let you go. Russia comes in and says if they want to be a part of us you are not going to stop them. so they fight over the property.

  2. Essentially, after the break up of the Soviet Union in the early 90's, when Georgia broke away from the USSR, two of its own provinces wanted to be independent, South Ossetia and Abhkazia, or go back to Russia.  A cease fire was called and the break away republics have been under autonomy ever since to Georgia's dismay.  No one in the west recognized them except Russia who has provided them with aid and passports.

The current escalation happened when Georgian president decided to launch what had to be known to him to be a suicide mission in trying to retake the South Ossetia region.  Russia predictably used the opportunity to forcefully move in to "protect" the break away provinces.  This Monday morning the situation was at the points where the Georgian military was being pushed away from the break away provinces and essentially eliminated all possibilities of Georgia re-taking them.

As far as power politics, Russia is not aiding the Ossetians because they feel bad, but because it is convenient in regards to their strategic interests.  We on the other hand could care less about a "democractic" Georgia if it could not be used as a leapfrog to the Caspian Sea and its riches.

Russia is taking care of its neighborhood in the way it wants, and we are not too happy about it but cannot do anything about it.
