Aspergillus colonies are downy to powdery in texture. The surface color may vary depending on the species. The reverse is uncolored to pale yellow in most of the isolates.

  1. Think of the molds you see on sink tops. In some cases, if you touch them, pieces of the fungi start to float in the air (downy) while in other cases, they seem to stick to your finger like fine dust (powdery).

There are many kinds of aspergillus, their color helps in identifying which specie it belongs to. If you culture aspergillus in a petri dish (isolates) and look at the bottom of the dish, the colony may have whitish or pale yellow appearance.

  2. Yes, your teeth need a good clean.

  3. downy means "like down feathers".

    powdery means "like a powder".

There are different species of Aspergillus, based on taxonomic classification.

The opposite side of the Aspergillus has no color to pale yellow. It depends on the isolate (the individual samples) collected.

Aspergillus is a type of mold. It is commonly found in places where moisture is present. Eg, air vents, basements. It can cause disease in some people. It can cost much money to remove molds from households.

  4. reverse means the underside of the plate where the mould is growin into the agar.... as opposed to surface which grows like upwards and when you open the plate you can touch it!... hmm well... with gloves of course!

and isolate means it is a pure culture... so to speak! i.e. nothing else is growing on the plate except aspergillus =)
