this is also a variation of "do unto others as you want others to do unto you".

if you give your love to people, then people will give love back to you.

Love is generated internally. It is not something given to your or taken from you, it is what you have internally.

The only love you have is the love you give.  In other words, anyone in the world can love you, try to give you their love, but they cannot give you anything you don't already have (emotionally).  Also, you cannot take love from another person, nor can they take the love you feel away from you.

When you care, you love.  When you show you care you are "giving your love" (though you're not really giving it, you're actually "expressing" it) and therefore it shows that you have love.  So giving love away is the only way to know that you can and do love - so, therefore the love you give away is the only love you keep.
