  1. Just search the internet for poems. You'll find tons of them.

  2. Age 8 ... hmmm ... when you say "present" do you mean that she needs to memorise it? Or just read it? The following comments are based on her having to memorise the poem.

How about something by A. A. Milne?  He didn't just do the stories about Christopher Robin.

"The Four Friends" is one of my favourites. It has 166 words, but I think it would be hard for an 8 year old to learn. Of course, that depends on the 8 year old. It goes like this:

Ernest was an elephant, a great big fellow,

Leonard was a lion with a six foot tail,

George was a goat, and his beard was yellow,

And James was a very small snail.

Leonard had a stall, and a great big strong one,

Earnest had a manger, and its walls were thick,

George found a pen, but I think it was the wrong one,

And James sat down on a brick

Earnest started trumpeting, and cracked his manger,

Leonard started roaring, and shivered his stall,

James gave a huffle of a snail in danger

And nobody heard him at all.

Earnest started trumpeting and raised such a rumpus,

Leonard started roaring and trying to kick,

James went on a journey with the goats new compass

And he reached the end of his brick.

Ernest was an elephant and very well intentioned,

Leonard was a lion with a brave new tail,

George was a goat, as I think I have mentioned,

but James was only a snail.

"Disobedience" has about 260 words, but it has a good, straightforward story line, lots of repetition, and a rollicking rhythm -- all of which make it easy to memorise. It is:

    James James

    Morrison Morrison

    Weatherby George Dupree

    Took great

    Care of his Mother

    Though he was only three.

    James James

    Said to his Mother,

    "Mother," he said, said he;

"You must never go down to the end of the town, if

you don't go down with me."

    James James

    Morrison's Mother

    Put on a golden gown,

    James James

    Morrison's Mother

Drove to the end of the town.

    James James

    Morrison's Mother

    Said to herself, said she:

"I can get right down to the end of the town and be

    back in time for tea."

    King John

    Put up a notice,

    "LOST or STOLEN or STRAYED!

    JAMES JAMES

    MORRISON'S MOTHER

    SEEMS TO HABE BEEN MISLAID.

    LAST SEEN

    WANDERING VAGUELY

    QUITE OF HER OWN ACCORD,

SHE TRIED TO GET DOWN TO THE END OF

THE TOWN - FORTY SHILLINGS REWARD!

    James James

    Morrison Morrison

    (Commonly known as Jim)

    Told his

    Other relations

    Not to go blaming him.

    James James

    Said to his Mother,

    "Mother," he said, said he,

"You must never go down to the end of the town with-

    out consulting me."

    James James

    Morrison's Mother

    Hasn't been heard of since.

    King John

    Said he was sorry,

So did the Queen and Prince.

    King John

    (Somebody told me)

Said to a man he knew:

"If people go down to the end of the town, well, what

    can anyone do?"

    (Now then, very softly)

    J. J.

    M. M.

    W. G. du P.

    Took great

    C/o his M*****

    Though he was only 3.

    J. J.

    Said to his M*****

    "M*****," he said, said he:

    "You-must-never-go-down-to-the-end-of-...

    you-don't-go-down-with ME!"

As an alternative, most libraries have a copy of "The Golden Treasury of Poetry",  selected by Louis Untermeyer. Most of the poems in this volume are for kids of various ages, and you can probably find a poem in there to match her personal interests.

  3. search for poems by a wonderful author. like maya angelou or walt whitman,  then copy and paste to your word or works program and run a word count on it.

  4. Soon you will be nine

    Which will be just fine.

    Another grade of school,

Just don't act like a fool.

    You'll make new friends,

And some will come to their ends.

    But do not worry

    Or be in a hurry,

    For many more will come;

    You cannot imagine the sum.

    Your life is young

And you'll go through some dung,

    But keep your chin up

    And keep full your cup.

    Keep your dreams alive

And you'll be sure to thrive.

    Happy Trails!
