Hi, I've recently had a new boiler fitted (Worcester 37cdi). The guy who fitted it noticed that the water coming from the rads was black, so he put some sort of cleaning agent in it & told me to give him a call in a couple of weeks so he could come and flush it all out etc. I've tried calling him loads of times & left messages but to no avail!!. He told me this stuff will eat away at the system if not flushed out!. Please can someone tell me how to flush it out & refill etc?

Thankyou (in advance!)

  1. If it was inhibitor that he put in then it should have been flushed out and inhibitor put back in again - i think this protects the boiler and radiators.  To flush out the system you should find a draining point (on a radiator) which is like a little nozzle not where you air them.  Attach a piece of hose pipe and put it outside then you open it up and allow the system to drain.   To refill again you should have a little tap on the pipes near to your boiler, this should be turned on and the system will begin to fill up again - keep an eye on the boiler pressure whilst carrying this out - dont let it go beyound 2 bar.   Air the radiators as normal making sure the pressure on the boiler doesnt drop below 1 bar.  Good luck.

  2. I'm sorry, But what warranty you had with worcester is now invalid, it is one of the most important conditions of installing new boilers on existing installations, is that the pipework & radiators are suitably flushed, before connection of new appliance, My advice is, write to the guy who installed it explaining this, it's his responsibility!! No joy with that, Trading standards, solicitor. Any way it maybe a problem if left  in too long, But just follow the other answers on how to drain & refill, just do it 3 or 4 times the cleaner the better. Good luck :) :) :)

  3. In your system, you should have a drain c**k (usually at or near the lowest point) attach a length of garden hose to this and lead the free end outside to a drain, ensuring that there is an almost continuous fall.

Open the c**k and successively open the radiator bleed valves starting at the top of the house, this will enable all the contaminated water to drain out.  Close each bleed valve when the air stops sucking into the radiator.  Refill the system, opening each radiator bleed valve (starting from the bottom of the house to allow the air out.  Close each bleed valve when the air stops coming out.

Run the pump and bleed all the radiator again - there will probably be some residual air in the system.

  4. What you have is oxidisation of the radiator metal . The solution is to have a power flush done by a qualified installer. That way, all the sludge comes out, and the system is refilled with clean water.

Just draining wont be of much use, because the sediment lies in the bottom of the radiator.

Incidently, the flushed out water is great for the garden. See if you can at least channel it to the compost heap

  5. look for your drain c**k which will be on outside wall of your home and open (switch boiler off first) central heating should empty completely.

then to refill shut off the drain c**k and open the filling loop valve located just under your boiler and go round all your radiators with a bleeding key to let any air out of the rads

you should do this a couple of times or until the water runs clear

  6. Just guessing here but presumably you will have to bleed the radiators and drain out the water.... then allow clean to go into the system.
