  1. 1st. take out the the ()'s. to do that: 1(3x^2-5x+8)-1(x^2+4x+1)

    Which would equal:

    3x^2-5x+8-x^2-4x-1

    Then combine like terms

    3x^2-x^2= 2x^2

    5x-4x=x

    8-1=7

So your simplified answer is: 2x^2+x+7

    I hope I helped.

  2. Mrs. Harkness has the right idea, but be careful.  The x terms are: -5x and -4x, NOT 5x and -4x.
