Can someone please help me understand the dublin bus system?

ok so i need to know, can i buy my ticket when i get on the bus or do i have to buy my ticket in advance? if so from where? i'm starting college in dublin next week and i'm so confused, also is it better to get the bus or the luas?

please help i don't want to get stranded!

For most journeys you pay on the bus, it is only for long distance services that you have to book in advance.
