Can someone please help me understand this prompt?

What does this quote mean? -

"The zeitgeist of the 1920s was one of frivolousness and illustrated a conflict or breakdown of traditional values."

Write an essay in which you defend, challenge or qualify this statement and explain the strategies(examples) used by F. Scott Fitzgerald to achieve this purpose.

by the way..if you didn't know already..this is a synthesis essay based on "The Great Gatsby" by F. Scott Fitzgerald.

it means that the 20's were all about being frivolous and breaking down traditional values.  

so what do you think?  how did fitzgerald show this in 'the great gatsby' and how did he not show it?  if you think he did show this, then write why and give examples.  if you think he did not show this, then write about how this book doesn't support his quote.
