Here's the Application:

The Pacific Ocean covers about 1/4 of Earth's surface. If all other oceans and seas cover about 12/32 of Earth's surface, then about _____ percent of Earth's surface is covered by land.

reduce 12/32 into simpler fraction.. divide the numerator and denominator by 4.. and you will get a fraction of 3/8

the ocean part of the earth is 1/4 + 3/8 = 2/8 + 3/8 = 5/8

so the land portion is 8/8-5/8= 3/8

convert the fraction of 3/8 into percentage.. and you will get 37.5 %

We are given,

Pacific Ocean makes up 1/4 of the Earth

The denominator is the number on the bottom.  The Pacific covers about 1/4, or 1 part of 4 (if you cut the globe into 4 pieces, the Pacific covers one).  

The rest of the oceans cover about 12/32, which reduces to 3/8 (12/4=3 and 32/4=8, so 3/8).

           3/8  Other oceans/seas

           5/8 water

8/8 earth - 5/8 water = 3/8 land
