What role does social class and class ambiguity play in Wuthering Heights? To what extent is Heathcliff's social position responsible for the misery and conflict so persistent in the book?

  1. wow. do your own homework.

  2. Heathcliff is a "foundling" being brought up in noble society.  He's an outsider, not of the white, aristocratic blood; other characters in the story comment that he is possibly a gypsy, or of Asian origin.

His situation is made stranger by the fact that he is still attached to a strong house, and is of noble character.  Ultimately, however, his status as an outsider weighs against the heart of the woman who loves him, and she marries another man.
