I know there are things are lot worse to go in to hospital for so I feel abit silly but I am having 3 of my wisdom teeth out on tuesday and will be awake. I had a bad experience at dentist once when the dentist kept injecting me with LA but i could still feel it so i am terrified of what its going to be like and keep having nightmares about which is soft i know. What is IV Sedation and does everyone get that and do you get painkillers after or is paracetomol enough to control the pain?

THanks for your help

  1. i would defiantly think of having them out under anaesthetic!

It hurts A LOT and  i was in agony for week's.

Its the most uncomfortable feeling in the world.

I lost over a stone in weight because i couldn't eat anything at all. And i kept spitting out mouthful and moutful of blood. :(

DONT DO IT AWAKE!!! SCARY SCARY !!!

  2. The last time i had my wisdom tooth out i insisted i was put to sleep under a general anasthetic.... Reason being the first one i had out was not a very nice experience.... the Dentist had his knee up on the chair to create a lever to extract it... I'm sorry to scare you, perhaps i'm just a wimp, and the Dentist did say i had deep roots so i'm sure that didn't help

  3. Dentists disturb me, so a few years ago when a dentist said she would take my wisdom tooth out, I told her not to bother as I was concerned as I'd always thought you needed to go to hospital for the extraction so I put up with it for two years. Until earlier this year I had an abscess because of it, so had to go the dentist, a course of antibiotics and two days later had the wisdow tooth extracted, wide a wake and I don't know why I'd bothered worrying it was a couple of seconds and it was out with no fuss or pain at all, hardly any bleeding  and it healed lovely and so will yours. Explain to the dentist how worried you are and your concerns they will be more considerate and understanding with you.

  4. you should get perscribed for Xanax or however it's spelled...it will make you so relaxed right before your surgery. I had mine out about a month ago and my dentist gave me an IV  then gave me a few shots in my mouth, i was awake but in twilight...i could see what was going on but i was so out of it...after if you get what i got you will probably cry just because the twilight is wearing off not because your in pain. It's really not bad they give you vicodin and if you take it every 4 or 5 hours it's a piece of cake! But seriously get the xanax and you will be so relaxed!

  5. I had one removed awake, it is a fairly frightening experience, however, he was really good and fast.

I've also had one where i was put out, I can tell you, i'd rather deal with the fear of hearing the sounds of having it removed, then the groginess and all around discomfort of being put out.

ask for pain pills, if you don't need them dont use them, but if you get home and 5:05 rolls around, and you're in terrible pain and cant get a scrip, that sucks.

  6. That is insane, I'm sure it can be done, but I got mine out and it was a grisly operation with alot of blood and stitches and it was a gaping hole for a few weeks - it was done under general anaesthetic as it should, that way you're conscious through the whole op - don't feel a thing, or remember a thing - but are able to follow instructions and respond.

  7. I had general anaesthetic and just went to sleep and woke up not knowing anything, then went home. I had some stitches and I tried to eat a curry later on and that was a mistake. Can't remember about how much it hurt.

  8. I've had all mine out (two sessions) under local anaesthetic at the dentist.  It's a bit strange having someone tugging on a tooth but it is soon over.  It was a bigger job than a simple extraction and it does hurt a bit afterwards  - but nothing that off-the-shelf painkillers can't help with.  The stitches were a bit of a nuisance so it was relief when they came out.

It is just a bit of dentistry.  Worse things will happen in your life, if they haven't already.  There are many worse pains.

IV sedation makes it more of a big deal and won't alter the discomfort  afterwards.  Personally, I wouldn't want the sedation.  The ordinary injections were perfectly adequate to stop any pain from the extraction process.

I hope it all goes well for you - It really is not worth worrying about.

  9. I had two wisdom teeth extracted in the dentists chair in under five minutes... didn't feel a thing, xx

  10. I am he biggest wimp in the world when it comes to dentists and I had a wisdom tooth taken out a few months ago while awake and didnt feel a  thing. all that will happen is the dentist will inject you, like when you get a filling, he will then tap your mouth and ask if you feel anything. You will then feel a tugging and out it will come.

The best thing for dental pain is ibuprofen.

    hope that helps.

p.s If I can come out after an extraction alright, Im sure you will :)

  11. I had 3 wisdom teeth out in the chair and Im not going to lie it was not the most pleasurable experience however it was not painfull at all. After it ached a bit but it wasnt unbearable so chill out your working yourself up. The thought of it is worse than having it done.

  12. My 4 wisdom teeth were impacted and  Ihad to have them all out. Get prepared. Eat well the day before , take the day off, relax, get to bed early, sleep well. Take someone with you that is a responsible person. You'll be a bit out of it. I wasn't completely under. The worst is the noise and the sheer force and pressure that they have to exert to remove them. Obviously mine were impacted ie growing under and backwards into jawline so was a pretty difficult case.Take a couple of days off work afterwards too, Youll be given painkillers, don't have visitors, drink water.

People still comment on my fabulous cheekbones and jawline. Its worth it if its been recommended. Take Care.

  13. OUch dont do it

  14. IV sedation is another name for general anaesthetic.

I was given the choice and went for awake and am glad I did - dont get me wrong - I was terrified but all i could feel was some tugging around the bits the LA hadn't reached.

Afterwards the dentist showed me the biggest tooth I had ever seen in my whole life and said well done - it really looked as though it should have hurt a lot.

Under LA you can move the rest of your body and squawk vocally if the pain gets too much - a good dentist should respond accordingly - the very best of luck to you!

  15. Hi well first off sedation is NOT another name for general anaesthetic.  With GA you would be completely asleep, sedation has basically a calming effect.  GA is not used anymore in general practice as it is bloody dangerous, and I personally would NEVER undergo any operation on GA unless it was major!!!!  Getting a tooth extracted is really not that bad, Iv had one done, just take the LA and the surgeon will gladly stop if you do feel anything and administer more if needed.  They're not as bad as most people make out!!!!

  16. I had three wisdom teeth out while awake.  After the injections kicked in I didn't feel a thing.  A few hours later I was eating soft food and back to normal eating within a week.  I had no problems afterwards.  It wasn't the best half hour of my life, but certainly not the worst!  I had IV sedation for something not related to dentistry.  One minute I was chatting to the anaesthetist, the next waking up in another room.  They put a cannula in my hand to inject the drugs with.  Unless there are major problems, I would just go for the pain killing injections.  It honestly didn't hurt me at all.  Try not to worry too much - your dentist will be expert at extracting teeth.
