The original role of a trade union was to ensure a fair wage for work. many years ago companies could pay what they wanted to, and people were working dangerous jobs for pocket change. Trade unions were formed to join large groups of people of certain qualifications together, so that large companies couldn't take advantage of people. Coal miners were one of the first groups to use this method, because they were underpaid, and overworked, and really had no other options to make a living.
