Can someone please tell me what an average day as a prison officer in Australia would involve?

Just wanting some information from people who already work in this job and can tell me what their duties involve on a daily basis.

  1. It depends on roster or police station for example in one station you would go on patrols, etc....


  2. I'm in NSW and although I'm not a prison officer (now called Corrective Services officers) I work with them regularly in my occupation.

    There are a number of different areas a corrective officer can be working, and it's not always in prisons. They have a transport division which conveys prisoners by road or air to another facility. They have teams who often work closely with police (in police station cells) of larger stations and accompany criminals to court for bail hearings etc.

    Then there is the gaol wardens (or "screws") which supervise inmates and their visitors closely in person or via closed circuit tv cameras in each of NSW 28 prisons. This position involves shift work over 24 hours/7 days and can be quite physically and mentally demanding.

    There are also avenues to work in centre administration, dog handling and probation and parole service (supervising released inmates). While I don't have specific detail about what the positions involve, it may be best to contact your state corrective services department and ask some questions.
