Question:

Can someone please tell me why Chinese takeaways in Britain charge extra for the rice?

I moved here 8 years ago from the US, and don't remember ever having to pay extra just for plain rice to go with the main dish! But here in Britain you have to order it separately and pay extra (like £1.50+) for it. Particularly, can any owners of Chinese takaways explain that to me? I feel like it's a ripoff, especially since in real Chinese cuisine the rice is the basis of the meal, not an extra!

  1. we buy whatever without the rice, my beloved boils a batch and freezes it, then we use what amount we want , it's a lot cheaper

  2. I dunno about you, but I live in California and 1/2 the time I have to pay for rice. Maybe I go to higher up Chinese restaurants or something but we order dishes (entrees) separately which are shared, then you order rice separately (sometimes 1 plate is complementary).

(Sigh, I envy that you're in Britain... haven't been in a while and I need a vacation! Arg!)

  3. because it is harder to grow and ship it there

  4. They do here, too in United States.  But some restaurant will include the rice free of charge.

I guess it's a way that restaurant make more money.
