Gilded Age: Businesses got bigger, and so did the fortunes of those who owned or invested in them. Between 1860-1892, the number of millionaires in the US grew from 400 to more than 4,000. They filled their palace-like homes with gaudy decorations and European art and antiques. It was dubbed the "Gilded Age" in 1873 by Mark Twain.

Progressive Era: Reform effort. Progressives didn't work as a single group. Some fought railroad monopolies, child factory worker conditions, equal rights for African Americans, and to protect forests.
