  1. There is no answer to this question, save the answer that lies within yourself. You know the answer, you just need to look. Find a quiet place where you can make a fire and stare into the flames, alone, until you understand.

  2. A concrete meaning of happiness occurs within a worker when he has poured a cement slab that is level, free of bubbles, has a smooth even surface, and doesn't crack while it's curing.

  3. If you have a BA, why the ms word. Happiness I think is the future expectation of having pleasure, and pleasure includes the pleasure of knowing you will survive.

  4. Let's see: happiness - is it waking up and feeling utterly at one with yourself? feeling at peace? and in good health? when even the ordinary appears special? when even an atheist wants to believe in some GOD whom he can thank for a beautiful sunset? or is it standing on the edge of a vast ocean and feeling in complete harmony with the universe? Or is it that moment of enlightenment when you realise just how much someone loves you? I don't know... you choose...

  5. People have values: things that they will act to gain or maintain. Happiness is a judgment that occurs when we see that our values are successfully being supported, achieved, or maintained.

  6. Without resorting to the wikipedia entry, I think it is apparent that happiness is truly subjective.  There is no external measure of happiness with which you can compare one individual's happiness to in relation to another.  You can't even say "on a scale of 1 to 10 I am an 8," because my 8 and your 8 could be two totally different things.  I am sure Michael Phelps is a happy fellow, but I am a pretty happy guy too.  Can anyone say for sure who is happier?  No.

As you can see in the wikipedia entry, people throughout the ages have come up with many ways to define happiness.  The only one that will ever hold true is defined by each individual.

  7. Happiness is an emotion associated with feelings ranging from contentment and satisfaction to bliss and intense joy.

A variety of philosophical, religious, psychological and biological approaches have been taken to defining happiness and identifying its sources.

Philosophers and religious thinkers have often defined happiness in terms of living a good life, or flourishing, rather than simply as an emotion. Happiness in this older sense was used to translate the Greek Eudaimonia, and is still used in virtue ethics. In everyday speech today, however, terms such as well-being or quality of life are usually used signify the classical meaning and happiness is reserved for the felt experience or experiences that philosophers historically called pleasure.

Happiness forms a central theme of Buddhist teachings, which focuses on obtaining freedom from suffering by following the Eightfold Path. In the Buddhist view, ultimate happiness is only achieved by overcoming craving in all forms. Aristotle saw happiness as "the virtuous activity of the soul in accordance with reason," or the practice of virtue. In Catholicism, the ultimate end of human existence consists in felicity, or "blessed happiness", described by the 13th-century philosopher-theologian Thomas Aquinas as a Beatific Vision of God's essence in the next life.[1] One psychological approach, positive psychology, describes happiness as consisting of positive emotions and positive activities.

While direct measurement of happiness is difficult, tools such as The Oxford Happiness Inventory have been developed by researchers. Physiological correlates to happiness can be measured through a variety of techniques, and survey research can be based on self-reported happiness levels.

Research has identified a number of correlates with happiness. These include religious involvement, parenthood, marital status, age and income. Happiness economics suggests that measures of public happiness should be used to supplement more traditional economic measures when evaluating how successful public policy is.

  8. I'm assuming you don't just want a dictionary definition since you can get that online yourself.

    Happiness is a free mind.

Devoid of stress and worries, and open to the world with no negative thoughts holding it back.

  9. ah yes - the concrete meaning of something subjective yes i have one of those right here with the round squares!

  10. Happiness is to know what is truly good for you and to make it your own forever.

  11. I wrote a reflection on the true meaning of happiness and where to find it. Enjoy.

    Illusions of Happiness

    We beings

    can find happiness

    in various places.

    Some find it in wealth,

    through expansive amounts

    of money.

    Some find it in power,

    through the ability to

    rule others,

    and force them to do

    their bidding.

    Some find it in fame,

    through others’ adoration

    and devotion to them.

    Some find it in beauty,

    through health and

    lovely physical appearance.

    Although sometimes,

    happiness, just like everything

    else in the Universe,

    is not but an illusion.

    A simple illusion which

    deceits most of us.

    For greed snares opportunities

    at pure happiness:

    it forces our desire

for wealth, power, fame, and beauty

    to escalate,

and twists it like a washrag.

    Wealth conquers contentment,

and molds it into extensive lust.

    And even when we are

    satisfied,

    greed deceives us,

    and makes us unhappy,

    until our sanity

    is snuffed out.

    Power becomes overwhelming,

    and takes control of our

    senses and awareness.

    It is then that foolishness

    forces us to become ignorant.

    Fame is similar to power.

    Power is similar to fame.

    Either is obtained when

    one is possessed.

    And the consequences of fame

is equal to that of power.

    And what does physical appearance

    bring us?

    Compliments? Smiles? Others’ devotion to

    look like you?

    These things will force you

    to strive for

    more, and more, and more,

    until you destroy yourself

    in your epic quest for

    joy,

    which was just an illusion.

    Which of these best suits

    you, dear friend?

    Wealth, power, fame, or beauty?

    Why not seek true happiness?

Look past the magician’s cunning tricks,

    and search for happiness

that can only be found within

    yourself and others.

    True happiness

    can be found by giving

    elation to others.

To drop a quarter in a donation box,

to participate in a Walk for

Cancer, or Hunger, or other struggles.

But are these obstacles illusions as well?

    Can someone who is starving,

or is pained by a disease

    find true happiness also?

    Anyone can find true pleasure,

    but only if they wander

    down the correct path.

    Sometimes simple things are

    where pure happiness is

    found.

    Like sitting ‘round a

    crackling, welcoming fire,

    surrounded by

    brothers, sisters,

    aunts, uncles,

    grandmas, grandpas,

    cousins,

    mothers, and fathers.

    Or a simple stroll down

    a beach in the evening,

as the setting sun casts the clouds into

    amalgamates of

    orange, yellow, pink, and purple,

    with the rippling waves

    tickling your toes.

So I leave you with this

    vague question:

    Where will you find happiness?

    Will you find it in

    wealth,

    power,

    fame,

    or appearance?

Or will you choose happiness through

    bliss in unfortunate others,

    family and friends,

    or tranquil sanctuaries?

    As said,

    happiness is sometimes

    an illusion,

and only the wise can truly

    find inner bliss,

and elude the Illusions of Happiness.

  12. what is BA? is this a means of good grammer.or are you a sheep in wolf clothing?

  13. It's a feeling.  It may be formulaic, meaning that one can break it down to "if a person has x, y and z they will be happy".  But I haven't seen a formula that adequately covers it yet.  Not to say it doesn't exist.  Just haven't seen it yet.  And I do think it's more complicated than most realize.

That being said I do believe that someting like 80% of a persons happiness has to do with how well the relationships with the people in their life are going.  If this part of us, our ability to relate and get along with others, is broken, we will find ourselves unhappy most of the time.  But of course we need other things too.  Health is important to happiness.  Having enough to eat has something to do with it.  Perhaps people need a bit of progression and new things in their lives too.

Like I said it's complicated.  And one could even say that a healthy person doesn't FEEL happy all the time.  A normal, healthy person experiences pain, loss, disappointment, sadness and other things.  But they don't dwell in these areas for extended periods of time.  And, in an overall sense, they could still be described as happy people, even though at any particular point in time they may not feel happy.

Sorry, I didn't give you concrete, just a discussion.

  14. It is your right to be happy but happiness is within you but you can not enjoy by yourself. You have to give it to others and it will come back to you in multiple way. Happiness is filled every where in the world. You should know the knack as given above.Conscious mind is attached to Sub-conscious mind and sub-conscious mind is attached to divine power. When you think good, wish good, speak good and do good, It proceeds from conscious mind to divine power which is full of happiness and you become happy. Just experience in your life.

  15. G That is the condition when you abandon the smart and glitzy, the approved and unapproved and make great efforts toward a goal you  have chosen. Do not listen to textbook excerpts from first level psychology classes. Just be careful the accomplishment of your goal will not create unhappiness for others, unless they just want to be jealous.

  16. Happiness varies from person, but all forms of happiness share one common trait.

It causes the person feeling the happiness to repeat doing the thing that caused them that feeling.

The state of being knowledgeable for instance is a form of mental happiness.

s*x is a physical happiness and

    Companionship is a emotional happiness.

Alot of people seek knowledge, s*x or companionship because it gives them positive feelings or "happiness"

usually depressed people are ones who find little to no forms of mental, physical, or emotional happiness

  17. The reason for mankind's happiness stems in direct relation to our purpose in life.  Those without a true cause in life are destined to wander through it in a haze while those who have priorities and purpose to their life, whether that be a task or a person to dedicate oneself to find a way to go on through pain and joy.

Having a purpose or reason for being brings with it happiness.

I suggest you read the book "Man's Search for Meaning" By Viktor Frankl for an eye opening detailed account of what it's like to lose absolutely everything in a WWII prison camp yet still be able to find purpose in life itself.

    Have fun!  Mistress Dolly
