Can someone recommend a GPS that's good for both car and woods?

  1. garmin  it has the option to be pluged into a ciggarette lighter and it has a battery that charges soo it can run when its not pluged in


  2. There's a compromise.  Automotive units have large touchscreens and voice directions.  However, they aren't durable.  Handheld units have smaller screens and only beep, but you can submerge them in water.

    One unit that may interest you, however, is the Garmin nuvi 500 series.  They are brand new and look and act just like the rest of the nuvi series.  However, these nuvi 500s are waterproof and have a replaceable battery, so you can swap batteries when out in the woods.  The nuvi 500s are expensive though.

    If you can do without a large screen and voice directions, you could get a Garmin eTrex Legend HCx or Garmin GPSmap 60Cx or 76Cx.  Those are handhelds that can take the punishment of outdoor use.  They can give you turn-by-turn directions, but they will only beep when you approach a turn.  You'll have to look at the screen for the turn instructions.
