  1. I like fishes and I think 9:Fish Surfboards makes the best fishes out there (that's all they do, so it's their specialty). The fish shape that 9:Fish has makes it really easy to paddle and catch waves without having to ride a big longboard. This allows you to progress much faster and have a lot more maneuverability. Plus their prices are very reasonable and the quality is really good. They currently do a lot of collaboration with one of the first fish shapers out there, Clyde Beatty. He glasses some of their boards. Take a look at http://www.9fishsurf.com/reviews.html... for customer reviews. You'll see feedback from beginners to former pro's

  2. if you dont have much experience get a long board and oneills are usually good

  3. Don't look for a national brand, go to your local surf shop and ask about local shapers. Supporting a local shaper will not only give you  a board shaped for the waves your surfing in it will go far to sustain the local industry which is hurt by big named brands like Al Merrick which shape 1000 board at a time at a fraction of the cost per board then turn around and sell them as the same if not higher price because it is the brand you'd be paying for not the experience you'll get riding it.

  4. Al Merrick!

  5. Longer boards are generally faster than short ones.  Narrow boards are generally a little easier to turn  than wide ones.

Longer boards are easier to learn on, but harder to paddle (generally) in big waves.

I prefer fiberglass to epoxy, but that's a personal preference.  Brand names aren't really necessary, just talk to the guys (and girls) at several shops to find out what's good in your area.  Lots of shapers out there, and lots of good boards for decent prices.

Figure out what you want to do with it, then decide based on that.  If you're big, you'll need more flotation than if you're 5' tall and 100 pounds.  That will dictate, somewhat, what type of board you get.

Best thing to do is try a few, see what shape and size you like, then find a board that fits your desires.

  6. al merrick
