According to the theory of continental drift and plate tectonics, the continents were once part of a single giant supercontinent,called Pangaea which broke up. Recent measurements of the sea floor spreading along mid-oceanic ridges. Show the continental drift. To be on the order 4 cm per year. Assume that this rate has been constant throughout the past and take the current distance between South America and Africa to be 500 mL. Approximately how long ago did Pangaea break up?

>Despite if it is a fact or not, can you help me solve this please?

  1. your going to have to convert from cm to mL before you can do the math to figure it out.

  2. 500mi = (500mi) * (161000cm/mi) = 80500000 cm

    time = (80500000cm)/(4cm/yr) ≈ 20.1 million yrs ago
