Can someone show me the breakdown of how realtors charge you for getting an apartment for you in nyc?

  1. Brokers are paid either by you, one or two months rent, some by the landlord.  Stay away from Craigs. List.   Thursday's NY Post had story of 4 people arresting for stealing 1.9 million from prospective renters.  They lured them in with listings on Craig's List.


  2. They typically show you the apartments for free, then charge you a broker's fee for the place you find. Much like a finder's fee. The standard fee is equivalent to one month's rent. Any more than that, I would be suspicious of. Also, make sure your broker is licensed or go through a reputable agency, because there are SO MANY people out there posing as brokers who will take your money and leave you with nothing. You can also find no-fee apartments for rent directly by the owner on Craigslist, which is how I got mine. Good luck!
