  1. Divide by 4:

    |b + 4| = 12

    So you have two possibilities:

    b + 4 = -12 or b + 4 = 12

    b + 4 = -12, b = -16

    b + 4 = 12, b = 8

    So your answer is: b = -16, b = 8

  2. 4|b + 4| = 48

    |b + 4| = 12

    so either

    b + 4 = 12 => b = 8

    b + 4 = -12 => b = -16

  3. 4|b+4|=48

    first isolate what is in absolute value

    |b+4| = 48/4

    |b+4| = 12

    get rid of the absolute value sign

    so b+4 = 12    and   b+4 = -12

         b = 8         and   b = -16

  4. Well b=8 is the obvious answer since 4*12=48.

    -----------

    But you are realy interested in when |b+4|=12

    b+4=+12 implies that b=8

    b+4=-12 implies that b=-16

    ======

    So the answers are b=8 and b=-16
