How do you know if you are depressed, and what can you do to stop being depressed?

  1. Symptoms of depression include : tiredness, lethargy, low self worth/ esteem, anxiety, feelings of pointlessness/ meaninglessness, low appetite, insomnia, non specific sorrow, and suicidal/ self destructive thoughts or impulses. The only way thru it is to go thru it, meaning you have to actively engage in a process of change. Using therapy, anti-depressants etc. If a person sees the issue, not as ' suffering ' but 'experiencing ' that is a good place to begin. I've been there, and got thru it. I't takes time, and work, but is recoverable. Peace M.

  4. You feel down, don't feel like doing much, don't eat properly & are tired a lot of the time, burst into tears at the smallest ting etc.

    Try & cheer yourself up .. go for a walk .. go out with friends .. do something but don't wallow & sit at home !  

    Try to establish if something worrying you and what it is, then try & deal with it.

    My dad always says to us 'Its no good worrying about things you have no control over !!'.

  5. You know you are depressed when you have been to a doctor/ psychologist who has confirmed it. You suspect you are depressed with the following symptoms, lasting longer than 2 weeks and with no specific cause (i.e, bereavement, breakup etc)

    -Feeling very unhappy

    -Change in appetite, either eating a lot or very little

    -Weight change, independent of the above

    -Feeling generally unwell

    -Change in sleeping habits

    -Lethargy

    -Feeling that everything is pointless

    -Lack of interest in the things you used to enjoy

    I think these are the main symptoms. If you are adolescent, this is very common, but if it is affecting your everyday life, you should try to seek help. Hope this helps

    persistent sad, anxious, or "empty" mood

    feelings of hopelessness, pessimism

    feelings of guilt, worthlessness, helplessness

    loss of interest or pleasure in hobbies and activities that were once enjoyed, including s*x

    decreased energy, fatigue, being "slowed down"

    difficulty concentrating, remembering, making decisions

    insomnia, early-morning awakening, or oversleeping

    appetite and/or weight loss or overeating and weight gain

    thoughts of death or suicide; suicide attempts

    restlessness, irritability

    persistent physical symptoms that do not respond to treatment, such as headaches, digestive disorders, and chronic pain

    The only way to 'stop being depressed' is a combination of medication and therapy.

    There are many things you can do to help depression: exercise, natural cures, medications, diet changes, therepy.  Very few people agree on one cure for depression.  Different things work for different people, so it's best to work with a doctor you trust (one that won't just throw different drugs at you until you're too out of it to realize you HAVE emotions anymore!)
