My father is a nisei, which means the first generation of Japanese born abroad.

The first Japanese ship came to Brazil 100 years ago. Most of the immigrants were brought to Brazil hoping for a better life as Japan was very poor at the time, most of them went to the countryside to work on coffee plantations.

Japanese tradition nowadays vary from family to family... my father married a gaijin *foreigner. My mom is Brazilian, Portuguese descendant so I dont have much of my Japanese side, despite the eyes...

But I think in general, they mixed up pretty much with the western people and culture. In Sao Paulo we have the Liberdade, a originally Japanese neighborhood. I have heard that we have the largest number of Japanese after Tokio, but not sure whether this is true.

Most of the nipobrasileiros *Brazilian/Japanese   that are either mesticos *mixed, or sansei *second generation born abroad, are pretty much Brazilians in their way of being, nothing to do with the original Japanese from Japan.
