Montreal is the metropolitan hub of the province of Quebec, a French-speaking island in officially bilingual, but de facto majority English-speaking, Canada. The current youth generation represents a variety of ethnolinguistic backgrounds—French and English Canadian, but also many different immigrant-origin groups, including large Haitian and Hispanophone populations.

What then can we say about this most recent arrival on the literary scene, known as Latin American Canadian literature.  At present, there are approximately 40 Latin American writers living in Montreal. On the other hand, the use of the term Latino- Quebecois refers to any immigrant to Quebec from a Central or South American country.  Associations were created, among them most notably the Chilean Association of Montreal/Association Chilienne de Montreal. This association established the publishing house of Cordillera in 1978, which published the first anthology of Chilean literature in Canada in 1982.  Currently, Hispanophone newspapers such as El Correo in Montreal also contribute to the awareness and distribution of Latino-Canadian or Latino-Quebecois literature.  They are supported by two literary Hispanophone magazines, Sur [South], under the direction of Tito Alvarado, and La Botella Verde [The Green Bottle] published by Jorge Cantino based in Montreal.

Born in Santiago, Chile in 1944, Marilú Mallet is a filmmaker and writer who came to Quebec as a political refugee after the coup d'état against President Salvador Allende in 1973. Unlike many refugees, she had grown up wealthy, lived in a large, beautiful home and had been a part of Chilean high society. Her father was the Minister of Education for Chile and a close friend of Salvador Allende. Through him she frequented the political elite of the country and even called Allende her uncle. Her mother, a painter, initiated Marilú to the arts at an early age.
