Can someone tell me about trap doors in houses?

We had a trap door when I was growing up.  It is basically just a hole in the floor with a hinged cover that opens like a door.  You prop it up so it won't fall on you as you enter the basement or cellar.  Sometimes there is an entrance like this on the outside of your home too. Usually in older homes.  You need to be extra careful when the cover is raised.  Children or anybody can fall down the steps if they don't realize it's open.

It is just an opening to the crawl space under a house with pier and beam foundation. It was an easy way to get under the house to fix broken pipes or run extra wiring if needed.

I use to play under our house when I was young and the house was new...then I found big roaches under there years later...never went back under there unless I had too. I hate roaches!!!
