Some critics say Haley was a much better novelist than he was genealogist/historian and dispute the story of his proven connection to the Kinte clan.  (This is actually addressed in a new preface to ROOTS written after he died;  Haley admitted that ROOTS was 90% a work of fiction as, like most of us, all he had for some ancestors was names and figures and so he filled the rest in.)
