I sort of know why but I would like to get feedback from other points of views. I am doing a paper on this so I would like to use the feedback to create my paper.

Thanks

  1. I'm drawing a blank here....

I guess the only drawback is the potential for my individual right to infringe on your individual right. This is addressed in many states' smoking bans.

  2. With individual rights or privileges really since rights can and are often taken away, it puts more responsibility on the individual. With greater freedom (privileges) comes greater responsibility and accountability. It's hard work because you have to think and try to make good decisions about how you choose to behave or act. There is a lot to consider.

  3.     There is no disadvantages thank you. We have the greatest system in the world even if it does have a lot of problems. The socialists and the regulators are the only thing to be frightened of if we wish to protect those individual rights and freedoms that no other society in the history of the human has ever enjoyed. And beware of the Zealots.

  4. Individual responsibility?  It's not really a disadvantage.

  5. OK, an authoritarian, communitarian point of view would say:

    1. Individual rights give priority to the individual over the community. e.g. enclosure of the common lands and its impact on the communities that used to hold them.

    2. Individual rights make law enforcement harder. (although, they also make it more just)

    3. Individual rights tend to assume equality (and not everyone believe in equality)

    4. Entrenched individual rights hinder democracy (because the point of entrenchment is to prevent rules being readily overturned by democratic process).

    5. Individual rights allow a society to become unstable (because individuals are freer to pursue whatever culture or lifestyle they want)

These are of course not disadvantages that override the advantages, in my view, and many of them rely on a particular political viewpoint to make sense. Luckily these viewpoints aren't to common in the modern west.

  6. There is no other type of right than individual rights.

The disadvantage to rights accrues only to bullies who wish to impose their will on others.

Rights protect us all.  Of course I speak of real rights, like freedom of expression, religion, and self defense.  Not phony rights like the right to force others to pay for one's expenses.

  7. Public safety. Even bad guys have the same rights you do, until they are caught. The police can't just search someones house because of the way they look. They need to obtain a search warrant, and will need a good reason for it before the judge issues one, even if bad guys live there and are planning a crime.

This does not mean I favor giving up any of my individual rights or freedoms. If we start taking away individual rights to protect the public, the next thing you know, we are living in a condition similar to n**i Germany. Our rights do come with a price, and, unfortunately, sometimes that price is high. But i would rather pay that price than give any of my rights up.
