  1. THE GOVERMENTS WAY OF MAKING MORE MONEY FOR THEMSELVES !

  2. it is a tax of 10% on all goods (fuel some foods white goods car)& services(mechanical work plumber ect)

IT ALL GOES TO THE GOVERMENT

  3. The Goods and Services Tax (GST) in Australia is a Value Added Tax (VAT) on the supply of goods and services in Australia.

It was introduced by the Federal Government with the A New Tax System (Goods and Services Tax) Act 1999, taking effect from July 1 2000. The basic premise of the new tax was to broaden the tax base, which was heavily biased toward the provision of services.

Prior to the GST, Australia operated a Wholesale Sales Tax (WST) which imposed a tax on wholesales of goods. The WST was implemented in the 30's when Australia had an economy dominated by goods. Over the years however, Australia's economy evolved to be more services based, and the GST served to strip the unfair tax advantage that service providing businesses had over suppliers of goods.

The GST is levied at a flat rate of 10% on most goods and services, apart from gst exempt items, and input taxed goods and services.

  4. Everything that anonymous has written is accurate. The GST is distributed to each state in Australia, intended in part to replace taxes and levies, such as state based bank debit taxes, for example.

One of the most ridiculous GST impositions, when the legislation was designed, was on chickens - a cooked hot chicken attracted GST, whereas cold cooked chicken (a service was still undertaken), did not.

The reason that it is called a VAT, instead a true standalone GST, is that some excises and levies(taxes with another name) are taxed using GST, resulting in a tax on a tax. That is not the true intent of a GST.

The negotiating done by a high up member of the Australian Democrats  (without communicating with the party proper) with Prime Minister John Howard, to achieve those sometimes nonsensical outcomes, spelt the beginning of the end for the Australian Democrats who, up until that time, as a party, had vetted and improved legislation in the Senate.

In it's true form, I am definitely FOR the GST. Sales tax is one of the worst forms of taxation to administer and is more expensive to apply and use. I think that sales tax on motor vehicle parts was once 15%, as compared to a GST 10%.

  5. I remember when the GST (Goods & Service Tax) came into affect.  My dad was sitting in a cafe one morning and ordered a cup of tea. The lady brought over a pout of boiling water, a cup, a little milk jug and a tray with a variety of teas.

When my dad paid the bill it included the standard 10% GST and he said "what service?  I made the bloody thing myself!!!"

    i found it amusing.

  6. I'll put it into simplier terms lol

its 10% on the processed items, natural stuff like vegies and fruit doesnt have GST. In australia when going through the check-out, GST is already inclusive in the prices

    :) hope that helped

    *EDIT

Many people in Australia dont believe in it, but many do.. i think that GST is a good idea as it provides the services that we need from the Government for example we have a good medical service and dont Have to have private health insurance(unlike america) just to have a kid because we have public services, and we have a really good infrastructure process
