How old do you need to be? What does an event coordinator major in? What do they do exactly? And how much do they make? Sorry for so many questions. Any answer is appreciated!

  1. The first reply is great, so I can't add too much to that. However, her salary ranges may be off by quite a bit, depending on where you live of course. I've never, ever seen an event coordinator position, even at an entry level, for as low pay as she's posted. I made $20 entry and $30 as a low-level manager.

I have a degree in communication, but that's not necessary - I just fell into this field when a colleague quit and I was "filling in temporarily". I just happened to be not bad at it. You can do event planning courses through local colleges or your school board's continuing education program.

  2. An event coordinator is in charge of putting together a variety of events, ranging from, say, a small benefit concert to attract a few hundred people, to massive conferences to attract thousands of people. Among the many duties of an event coordinator:

    - finding a selection of venues for an organization to chose from, and then negotiating with the venue the organization choses regarding renting and staffing the space

    - finding and negotiating with those that will present or perform at an event regarding their fees and obligations

    - determining how information will be provided to attendees about the purpose of the event, and coordinating any printing requirements

    - coordinating how attendees will register for the event

And on and on and on.

You can get started on event coordination on a small scale no matter what your age; if you are a teen ager, for instance, you can help as a volunteer with community theater, small fundraising events, or events by churches, temples or mosques. Even helping with a friend or relative's wedding will give you a lot of background in what it takes to put on an event. The more active you become in these events, the better prepared you will be to pursue this as a career.

For a major, it could be just about anything: public relations, marketing, business, theater - any would be good to major in. But you need the aforementioned experience I noted most of all.
