I want to purchase a yacht that I can count on to sail from Galveston, TX to the BVI and even to the Med.

  1. A 27 footer for blue water sailing?  Yikes, my stomach is not that strong.  A 32 footer is the minimum I would go with for a blue water cruise of any appreciable distance.

Island Packets are built like tanks.  The trade off is they are not particularly fast boats, but they hold up well.

If you are buying used - then whether the boat will hold up or not will depend on what a certified boat surveyor has to say about its condition

  2. I would think an island packet would do a great job of safely taking you where you want to go, of course the boat must be in excellent conditon and the skipper/crew well experienced.  the island packet is a great built boat, but a bit heavy and not designed for speed or pointing.  good luck and have fun!
