I am vacationing for a week in Ireland. I would like to stay in County Clare, but I would also like to visit Dublin. What is the best way to get from the one place to the other? How long would it take?

  1. Between 3 and 4 hours, by car...... get the train it will be only 2 hours ... make sure you get the new Irish Intercity trains, they are comfortable fast and rarely stop between the two cities.

  2. well if you look on a map of Ireland, Co. Clare is on the west side of Ireland and Co. Dublin is on the east side.

Here is some info I found that you would like:

Re: Dublin to clare - How long?

    --------------------------------------...

About 3.5/4 hours i reckon via Limerick > Ennis > Ennistymon > Lisdoonvara. Just checked aa route planner and it recommends the N4. Personally, I'm not mad about this road but I haven't used it since the new toll roads were opened. I much prefer the N7 to West Clare. (You could leave the Lahinch Road before you get to Ennistymon and go via Corofin > Kilfenora but the road isn't as good.)

When you get to Limerick, don't take the ring round unless its rush hour - it takes you right (of left!) around the city just to bring you back in and over the Shannon in the city centre. Continue through the city centre and a right turn over the Shannon in the City Centre.

Instead of going through Limerick, you have the much more scenic option to turn off the N7 just before Birdhill (Limerick) for Killaloe/Ballina through Tulla, taking you out on the good side of Ennis to get on the Lahinch Road to Ennistymon. The traffic into Ennis from the Limerick side used to be busy bit I think the Ennis bypass has helped.

  3. You didnt say where you would be first.  If you fly into Shannon Airport you are right in the heart of County Clare.  Beautiful county a lot to see.

You can get to Dublin by way of Limerick it actually takes about 2 hours.  Or take the train from Limerick to Dublin.

You take the Ennis road to Limerick when you pass the second round a bout you take the road into Limerick and make a right on the first light and you will be on the Dublin Road.  Follow it out all the way to Dublin.

The train is nicer because you can see the countryside.

There is also a daily run to Dublin leaving from the Shannon Airport also.

    Hope that helps
