  1. A professional tiler told me that they just keep a concrete block nearby, and scrape the sharp edges against it to grind them down.  If you want to do it the hard way, you can use a grinder.

  2.   Using a rubbing stone of most any kind will also work.. A file  or I ve used the back of another  tile.. Almost anything to take the sharpness off the edge.. Once the tile is layed  flat  , grouting it flush will be another important step.   Another way used to get your "rubble/ mosiac  look is to use a hammer and break apart the tiles you have creating different shapes and sizes and using knippers to shape into place  GL

  3. basically, you are doing a tile mosaic.  you can use a tile nipper to clean off the really sharp edges.  To lay the tile, you have to make sure your surface is perfectly level and clean of dirt and other debris.  spread your compound evenly over a small area and start laying out your pieces.  then move to the next area and repeat.  the key to keeping your feet safe is a clean, level surface.
