I really want to work on my shooting from everywhere. I want to become a pure shooter. The websites that I look up usually say shoot 1000 shots a day but I cant get to the court where I live every day. I usually get to play two or three times a week and sometimes the weekends. Can somebody help me?

  1. In Lies We Trust's answer is a good exercise; I just do it with a regular ball, though, not a medicine ball. The best way to become a better shooter is to know where the ball is going when you release it. I'd say about 85% of the time (except for those d**n in and out shots!) right when I release I'll know exactly where the ball is going just by how it comes off of my fingers. And I think I have a better feel from that by doing that exercise with a basketball and also from shooting a lot.

I know you say you can't get to the courts every day, but when you do, there are a few things to try:

    1) Practice "form shooting": This was one of the few things my high school coach taught our team that I actually felt helped. Start off right in front of the basket and just work on your form (you know, BEEF: bend, elbows, eyes, follow-through), and really concentrate on getting your form down. When you make three in a row do the same thing on the left and right side. Keep doing this, gradually moving out until you hit a range you're comfortable with (probably for starters right around the three-point line). It shouldn't take 1000 shots and it's just as effective.

    2) Get a buddy to come with you (or just grab someone there who's willing) and have them pass to you. Every good shooter can roll off a screen or just get open, catch, and shoot. Have your friend toss different passes as you go to several spots on the floor. And when I say different, I don't just mean like a lob pass if you fade to the corner. Some of his passes should be crappy, since you're not always going to get good passes in a game. If you can learn to adjust to not always having the ball right in the shooting pocket, you'll be that much better.

    3) Finally, just play. I assume you want to get better at shooting because you play in high school, college, at your local YMCA, whatever, so you need to adjust to game tempos, too. If you want, you can focus on a specific aspect of your shooting; for example, for an entire game only shoot when you come off screens or something like that. Because you can make 100 shots in a row shooting around, but if you can put that to use in a game, it's worthless. Although maybe you can win a few bets with pinpoint shooting around.

Wow, that was long and probably a hassle to read, but you know what? It takes work to be an excellent shooter. Good luck.

  2. buy a medicine ball. Lay on your bed on your back and practive your follow through with your medicine ball. Do this with perfect follow through. Visualize every spot on the court you like to shoot from~
