  1. just to add to what the others have told you

don't expect cable or satelite TV to be anything near what you get in the states, you wont get even half the amount if channel's so for what you get it is extremely expensive

  2. Good answer from the last poster.

I can answer the other two questions because I have my Optus pay TV bill and Optus net Broadband bill in front of me. (I just payed my bills online)

The Optus TV bill is the same as Foxtel per month

    01/06/08 - 30/06/08 Service in advance           $91.77

                                        YES Platinum                   $19.00

                                        Entertainment Guide        $2.27

                                        ACCT Processing Fee    $2.00

    Optus net Broadband

    01/06/08 - 30/06/08  $67.80

For more cost of living prices in Sydney you can go to the Coles Online Supermarket. Below is there site.

  3. Also - most people don't have cable/satellite TV in Australia, we just stick with the 5 free channels!

  4. * 1 litre of milk - $3.30 from my local corner store.

    * Fast food value meal (eg. Medium Cheeseburger Meal would cost $4.75).

    * Internet (6GB/month from Optus would cost $40... the 6GB is divided up into two time blocks - peak and off peak).

    * Movie ticket around $12.00 (prices vary slightly depending on the cinema).

    * TV - Sydney is well served by commercial stations - Seven, Nine and TEN and Government stations - ABC and SBS. If you're after pay TV, get Optus and bundle up your home phone, mobile and Internet with them for a great deal. They also have Foxtel with it now.

Sydney has very frequent transport services with trains departing suburban stations every 15 minutes on weekdays and 30 minutes on weekends. However, the rail service hasn't been at its expected standard lately with many delays and poor service.

    Enjoy your time in Sydney.

  5. Firstly - you probably won't need a car at all, and if you have one, you probably won't be able to afford to park it...

Have a look at realestate.com.au for pricing on living in sydney, but I'd be thinking around $2000 per month up. Have a look in the surrounding suburbs, it's a fair bit cheaper and you're still close to the CBD.

By hamberger meat, I'm guessing you mean mince, so about $7-10 per kilo depending on the fat content.

I'm paying about $2.30-$2.50 for 2 litres of milk, so a bit over 1/2 of that should get you 1L

Small big mac meal is $5 or $6

You can usually get a decent sit down meal for $15-20 of course, depends on where you go and what you eat...

I think it's about $2.80 for a train ticket from one end of the city to the other, but you could just walk.

No idea about the TV and internet

A schooner in the city is $4-$6 depending on the establishment (will be more expensive at the Quay or Harbour )

Clubs really vary, usually $15-20 plus

Movies are about $15 for an adult

    Cheers

  6. renting a studio would cost around $2000 or more in Sydney.. the closer to the city, the more expensive..

A 1 bedroom.. umm roughly the same price..

We call hamburger meat "mince" here in Australia.. it depends on what kind of mince you want.. $5 - $10 a kilo..

1 liter of milk will be around $2 - 3..

Fast food meal? it depends on what you get.. $6 - $10 for a meal..

Dine in meal? $10 being the cheapest i've got a meal.. medium price could be $15 - $20.. it depends on what you want to eat.

Transport? Would be $3 - $5 .. just for the city..

Internet.. it depends on what plan you want.. your download limits.. etc.. it could cost up to $60 a month for 30GB of downloads. Thats what I pay anyway..  If you go over your limit, you might have to pay more. if its still free, your internet will be slowed down.

tv service.. depends on what you sign up with.. foxtel can cost upto $60 a month..

beer.. depends where you go.. some places could be cheaper, or more expensive. lets say around $4 or  $6

Movie ticket? i dont know.. i havnt been to the cinema in ages.. i would say $15.. renting a movie is around $7 for a new release.

Sydney has alot of transport.. you wont need a car really. Petrol is getting expensive anyway..Theres busses and trains.. and taxis as well.. It will take you anywhere you need to go.. with walking involved.. If you dont know where the bus goes etc.. just ask the bus driver.. they are friendly and helpful.. Same goes with trains.. just ask somebody..

Everything in Sydney is getting expensive..

  7. To add to the previous answer:

Internet ADSL+2 about $39 per month, depending on download limits.

Pay TV (Foxtel) $38 per month for standard package.

    Food around $80 - $110 per adult.

You don't need a car if you live near the CBD (Central Business District, we don't use the term downtown), although buying your groceries can be a bit difficult without one.
