  1. (Your Score) - [Course Rating (found on scorecard)]

    MULTIPLIED BY

113/ Slope Rating (scorecard as well)

To create your index multiply your handicap  by .96. You do this for your best 10 rounds out of 20 most recent

    EX:  Score: 88

            Rating: 72           Slope: 130

    [(88) - (72)] * (113/130)

    16 * .869 = 13.91

    13.91 * .96 =  13.4 HANDICAP INDEX

There should be a chart at your course with ranges of indexes and what your course handicap is based on that, and that is how many strokes you get when playing a scratch.

  2. There IS a formula used to calculate one's handicap.  It involves your gross score less the course rating times 113 divided by the slope....etc.

Mind you, DON'T confuse your handicap with your index!

A HANDICAP is the strokes you can deduct at a course BASED on your INDEX.  This will vary from course to course depending on the course rating & slope and which tees you are hitting from (blues, whites, etc.).  This is typiclly a whole number (not decimal)

An INDEX (often confused as your handicap) is an estimate of what the golfer might shoot on his/her best days (about 25% of the time) and NOT an average of a golfer's scores.

Your INDEX is expressed in a decimal form (6.2, 20.3, 15.6, etc.)

Let's say you have an index of 9.7 and if the course you're playing has a high slope (131) & high rating (74), your HANDICAP for that course could be a 13!

Conversely, if the course has a lower than 113 slope or lower course rating (say, 67), your HANDICAP could be a 7 or 6.

To sum it up, you have to have an INDEX to determine your HANDICAP.  The more scores you post the more your INDEX is affected and ultimately will affect your handicap.  Your posted data is updated by the courses on a monthly basis.

  3. Calculate a handicap differential for each score.  This is the difference between your adjusted gross score and the course rating multiplied by 113, divided by the slope rating.  Round to the nearest tenth.  Of the last 20 rounds you've played, take the lowest ten differentials and average them.  Multiply that by .96 and chop off any numbers beyond the tenth.  Do not round up or down.  This is your handicap index.  However, you need to be a member of a club to have a legitimate handicap.  Otherwise your scores are not available for peer review.  But at least you'd know what your handicap is.  The others guys answer is the simpler way to go as there are some things left out here to save time. Good Luck!

  4. it is how many strokes you average over or under par.

  5. There is no best or worst way - there is only the correct way.  The difference betwee what you shoot and the course rating is called a differential.  Take your lowest ten differentials out of your most recent 20 scores, average them.  Multiply the answer by .9 and that is your handicap index.  Go the index chart at your course and based on your index find what your handicap is based on which set of tees you usually play.

  6. The best way to figure out your handicap, on the go, in golf is to add up you total score, then subtract from the par. For example, if you shot an 85 on a par 72 golf coarse, your handicap would be 13, because 85 minus 72 equals 13.

  7. u add up all ur holes of the season based on birdies, pars stuff like that

  8. Easiest way to do it is to take 5 cards, substract the course par from your scorem, add the remainder together and divide  by 5, and you will have an indication of what your handicap should be.

  9. Matt -

    Go here:

    http://golf.sports.yahoo.com/tracker

It doesn't get any easier than that! It's a yahoo program, enter your scores and it spits out your handicap!

    Good Luck!

  10. All these answers are wrong!

YOUR TRUE HANDICAP is the worst part of your game.
