Question:

Can someone tell me the difference between a 2hp and 3hp Jiffy ice auger? Besides $100 dollars?

I usually drill through anywhere from 12-28 inches of ice. I'm sick of hand drilling holes and am in the market for a gas auger. I'm wondering if I should get the 3hp for $100 more than the 2hp model and if I would notice much of a difference. I'm looking for something that will last me a good 20 years so I'll be stuck with it for awhile. Planning on having a 9 inch hole on it.

  1. Holy smokes, how big a fish are you going to pull through a 9 inch hole?

I have pulled 25 lb pike and trout out of a six inch hole with no problem.

The 2 hp is good for 4 to 6 inch holes, but will suck at any bigger diameter. If you check the standard auger that comes with them you Will see the difference.

Unless weight and size are a consideration I would pay the extra. It will dig much faster.

If you are on a budget, the two hp will work up to six inch, but is slower and a little more fussy.

  2. It is like a 10 hp. verses a 20hp.lawn mower. You get the job done quicker and easier the more power you have.Think 20 years of ease or 20 years of wishing you got the 3 hp.
