Also, which type has a flat screen (i.e they are not just flat but have very little depth/can be wall mounted) or do both of these come with a flat screen?

Is there a particular name for the flat type of screen thats only a few inches deep, that I have described?

As you can see I am a bit clueless and would really like some easy to understand info. Thank you.

  1. Plasma uses gas, while LCD uses transistors (solid state) and have a longer life expectancy.  Both are relatively thin.

  2. Both types are thin and can be wall mounted.  Plasmas are heavier and more expensive (for the same resolution) but the best plasmas are better than the best LCDs.  In more modest price ranges, LCD is the best choice.  In fact, all the new sets of both types have excellent pictures; however, the pictures do look different, and some personal preference is involved.  You should go to the store and see for yourself what you like better.

  3. Plasma's are deeper at the back then LCD's but both can be wall mounted. Plasma's handle rich tones and deep dark colours better then LCD's and LCD's work better in brightly lit rooms. Plasma's usually come in bigger sizes and LCD's come in more various sizes. When going for an LCD you have to make sure the contrast ratio is high otherwise the quality of the viewing will be poor (eg 5,000:1) With Plasma's the contrast ratio should be minimum of 10,000:1 for good quality viewing.

If you go to any technology store they have t.v's on display and you can see for yourself.

  4. Yes, plasma is indeed expensive but LCD can be expensive when it is more than 60 inches. If you want go to a mid size TV, you can go for LCD. It would not be washed out in the bright rooms as plasma performs better in slightly darker room, work in varieties of temperature as it is solid state tech, easier to wall mount and rarely have burn out images.

Plasma produce better picture quality with the same resolution with a higher price. Over all in picture quality, plasma will do a bit better than LCD TVs. If you want to go for exclusive house entertainment where it will have a slightly darker room, go for plasma.

If you just want to watch cable, play PS3 and watch DVD, LCD is the way to go.

  5. Plasmas are better TVs when you want to get a bigger size, like 42 inches and up.  LCDs are better for smaller TVs.
