  1. Fraternities are usually social organizations. They require time and a financial commitment. It is not about having friends, but about building bonds of brotherhood. You learn about working as a team, and if you join a well-established (e.g. "national") house, you will have an alumni network.

Your probationary semester (some call it pledging) can be more difficult timewise as you need to demonstrate a commitment, but you should not be exposed to any hazing (look up the legal definitions for your state) since every state and every reputable house has outlawed hazing.

I benefited greatly from my experience and am still involved with a local chapter of my fraternity on its alumni board.

  2. Cons: You might be stereotyped as a typical 'frat boy' (not good); you have to pay fees, which can be expensive; there's the possibility of hazing; it can take up a lot of your time.

Pros: You have a built-in group of friends; if it has a strong alumnae network, those alumnae might be able to help you get jobs when you graduate
