Can someone tell me the pros and cons of getting my telephone service from my cable company?

I'm paying $35 a month for phone service from Verizon and that's for a budget service (pay by the call). I'm also charged $5 for long distance service that I hardly ever use. my cable/internet company had been after me to get one of their "all-in-one' deals where I can get Cable TV, high-speed Internet and "unlimited" phone service for "one low monthly price." I wanted to know if switching to cable provided phone service was a good or bad idea. Will I still receive bills from Verizon for "line charges" because I still have their equipment?

  1. Personally, I like the idea of having a hard-wired landline in case of emergencies. If you lose power, your phone service (on a home landline) will still work, with the exception of cordless home phones. VOIP service with your cable company will not work if there is a cable outage, or a loss of power. Also, the package deal you spoke of....read the fine print. The price goes UP after the first or second year of service.!!! Regarding the LONG DISTANCE charges, I cancelled my long distance service.!! I can still receive long distance calls, and I don't have to pay each month even if I do not use it.!  If I have to call long distance, I use an AT&T card, which lets me call for around 3 cents a minute....

  2. If you cancel the Verizon service you shouldn't have to pay them anything. The biggest problem with cable phone service is that it doesn't work if the electricity or the cable goes out. If your rotary phones don't work with the new service, you can get new phones for about 10 bucks each.
