  2. A networking storage device, also known as network attached storage (NAS), is a device with one or more hard drives connected via a network that stores data available to clients on the network.

Think of it as sharing a folder on Windows to have one computer access data on another, except a NAS is a dedicated device to do this.

A NAS can utilize RAID (Redundant Array of Inexpensive Disks) to ensure data is not lost in the event of a hard drive loss.  Redundancy process can also be proprietary, such in the case with the Drobo network storage device.

  3. It hooks up to your network like any other computer and then you can store your files (music & videos, pictures, documents, etc.) on it and access them from any computer in your house at any time since the storage device is meant to be left on all the time.  Also, depending on the model (I think this one supports it), if set up correctly you can access your files from any computer on the internet.

  4. Your computer has an internal storage device (disk drive) that you access all of your files on.  If you have another computer, it also has an internal storage device you can access files from.  If you wanted to share those files across the network, one way is to use a network storage device - literally a storage device on the network as opposed to the disk drive each computer has internally.  It is attached to the network via a network cable.  It can be useful for storing music files (mp3s, iTunes, etc) pictures, videos...just about any type of file you want to share or use on multiple computers.  It's also a good backup solution - a place to store backup copies of files in case you computer crashes...  good luck!
