I have always had fairly ordinary irons and would like to splurge on a really good one...would specifically like to know what is the best brand and/or model and what features to look for (eg. plate type)? Thanks.

  1. One of the best is a Rowenta.  They heat up fast, nothing sticks to the plate, and they do an awesome job!  They range in price from around $40.00 all the way to $115.00, but they are worth every cent.

  2. I used to feel the same way - but finally I realised that there are two good options.

First is to use a steamer - and a domestic iron never really puts out a good enough volume of steam. I used one in a Launderette once for two years, just hang clothes up on a hanger on a 6 foot installation, and put the steamer over them - the pipe was 5 foot long and about 3 inches across. Not something you'll do at home.

Second is to use a perfectly ordinary iron, and have a fine water spray. It is better and easier than using steam irons - I have a Tefal, which was the best one they made when I bought it for a fairly obscene amount of money. Now I use it still, but with a water spray - I don't bother putting water in it any more. Best is to use it on clothes before they dry properly, then leave them out to air fully dry afterwards for an hour or so.

Sorry to spoil your shopping trip - but really, I did the same thing myself. Sometimes these things really aren't anywhere near as good as they seem, and ironing is no less a chore than it was before.

  3. I've always had good luck with Black & Decker irons, but you could always check Consumer Reports for their ratings.
