My understanding of this(and somebody please correct me if I am wrong because I am not sure) is that it is to prevent men from using family resources to beautify themselves,as well as to cultivate a general attitude of humbleness.

Not sure about silk but I've heard that gold is harmful for men, that your body absorbs some chemicals from it.

I honestly do not believe all of the absorbing theories, but the bottom line it comes down to two points.  First and foremost because this is the order from our prophet (there are several traditions to support this) and secondly because men and women should be distinguishable from each other in terms of their dress.  And women by their nature have an inclination towards jewelry and soft things, so it would be unreasonable to forbid these things for them.

It refers to men dressing in an effeminate way.  In the old days, men's and women's clothing was pretty similar, except for the little things women did to make the clothes feminine.  That would be things like wearing pretty earrings, embroidery, and silky fabrics.  If a man wore these things, it would be like men today wearing a lacy blouse and high heeled shoes.

i actually read an article in a magazine from about a decade ago that explained that when gold is in contact with your skin, it actually absorbs some harmful chemical compound and it gets into your bloodstream. women who get their periods, replenish their blood cells all the time, but men will remain carrying it in their blood.
