Can someone tell me what this Mexican pastry is called?

During my childhood, I vaguely remember my Mexican grandmother deep frying some cookie-like pastries. She used a metal stick with a (usually floral) design on the end to dip into a thin batter. She would the batter-coated end into hot oil, wait for a few seconds, then remove the fried batter to form a flower-like funnel cake. These pastries were usually made around the holidays. * These are not sopapillas, bizcochitos, nor bunuelos. If you could tell me the name of the pastries and the name of the gadget used- I would be so HAPPY. thx

  1. Maybe it's Churros??? I'm not quite sure.

  2. They sound like rosette cookies, however, rosette cookies are Scandinavian in origin. You basically mix a thin batter like you describe and use a rosette iron to cook the batter in hot oil, then either lay them flat to harden, or roll them into a funnel cake. They are called Vappu in Finland. I don't know if there is a Spanish word for them though.

  3. Churros Españoles

  4. They are called buñuelos de molde or de viento. People think that deep-fried wheat flour tortillas, dipped in sugar are buñuelos. But the ones your grandma made are the true thing which calls for a the metal mold you mention. I think you might find it by asking members of the Mexican community, because they always know where such things are sold.

The tool you need is a metal buñuelo mold.

Check out the source, it is as Mexican as it gets.

  5. Hello, I live in Hawaii and we have a similar cookie-like pastry we call Chinese pretzels, which a pretzel iron is used.  I think another version is called rosettes and they use rosette irons.  Check out this site, maybe it will help you.  Good luck, I hope this helps.
