Question:

Can someone tell me what this knocking sound is?

I have a knocking sound coming from the front drivers side tire. Not necessarily the tire but somewhere in that vicinity. It starts as I get up to about 20-25 mph and gets louder and faster as I speed up. As I put on brakes and stop it stops the knocking sound. Any ideas? The car has oil in it's not the motor I don't think. It doesn't do it until I start driving.

  1. bad CV joint

  2. Could be the CV joint.

If it goes away when you put on the brake it maybe just a brake lining retainer that fell out. You need to have a mechanic check that possibility first before you pay for a cv joint. I have  had that happen before and it isn't something most mechanics will look for. these cost about $2.    A CV joint is $400.

  3. yep it the cv. might cost about 300 to fix

  4. If this is a front wheal drive it is a wheal bearing or axel.may be even the brake's Make & model would be helpful ?

  5. this happened to my plymouth voyager van a few yrs. ago. We had a knocking sound coming from the front drivers side tire too. Turns out though that it was an issue with the tire: something to do with a wheel-bearing? The best thing to do is take it in to a reliable mechanic, They usually give free estimates as to how to fix the problem. Sometimes though (especially if it's through someone you don't know) they may charge a diagnositcs fee-- could cost as $30-$100).

I really recommend having someone you trust take a look at it!

  6. Unfortunately it could be a couple of things.  Depending on what you consider a knocking sound, I would say because it is speed related look at your tire.  If your suspension is older and weak, a chopped tire or one with a broken belt inside, can be magnified by a bad strut, bad strut mount, bad ball joint, or bad wheel bearing.

You should have it checked out because things like that don't get better on their own.
