Can someone tell me what to do with my cucumbers now that they are vining on the ground? Do I need to find something for them to climb up? what about green beans, I planted some 3 days ago, how long do you think it will take for them to start growing? Does any other plants need to climb up something?

  1. Cucumbers don't need to climb. We grow them every year. They are fine on the ground. As for the green beans, if they are bush beans they don't need anything. Pole beans climb, but they will grow on the ground too, they're just a pain to harvest.

  2. My parents and my Grand parents both grew cucumbers commercially, they NEVER once had anything for them to climb on. We are talking acres upon acres. Since they are a vine, they will naturally either spread or climb, but climbing does nothing for the end product except add labor, and make it a bit easier to pick. Your beans should be sprouting within the next 3 or 4 days if everything is working right. Since you are most likely a back yard gardener, I would suggest you have something for them to climb.

  3. its easier to find your cucumbers if you let them run on pole or fence-running on ground is no problem just watch stepping on vines-green beans depends on if you bought runners then same as cucumber

  4. It really is much better if you can get the cukes onto some kind of support, but I don't know what to suggest at this point.  The vines are relatively brittle and the supports should be in place before they start to grow.  I suppose you could surround the vines with a section of wire fence, strongly staked into the ground, and then tie the vines to it.  I have used knee-high pantyhose and strips of fabric to tie the vines in the past.

  5. They should be allowed to climb.  A tomato cage would work.  As far as the green beans..that depends if they are pole beans or bush beans.  Pole beans need support.

  6. I can only answer for the cucumbers..... you can put up something, a trelis of sorts for them to climb but I just leave them to spread on the ground and they still grow to be the best cucumbers ever....
