  1. I've seen people riding more Giants than Specialized. The Yukons are pretty good starter bikes. They may not have the best components...but you can always upgrade. Giant doesn't have the Rainiers on their website anymore. I don't know if they're discontinued.

What is your budget? There's no bike that comes with good, longlasting brakes out the door unless you spend well over $1000 on the bike.

The best way to pick a bike is to see which fits you the best. Try going to your local bike shop that carries these bikes and demo them.

  2. I have 2 Giant Yukons. One is stripped down at the time and the other has been built up with better components. The Yukon has been a good bike for me. The one I ride is from 2002. My friend just purchased a $1700 bike and says he still prefers the ride of my Yukon. With that said, if I had to replace it today I would go with a Specialized Rockhopper. It is the next model up from the Hardrock and cost $549.00 at my cycle shop. Even though it wasn't in your choices, I would buy the Rockhopper without a thought.

Note: My Yukon only has 2-3 stock parts on the frame.
